GPATT'S 2017 REGULAR SEASON AWARDS + ODDS Empty GPATT'S 2017 REGULAR SEASON AWARDS + ODDS

The eve of the 2017 season is upon us and with the playoffs about to begin its time to hand out some regular season awards.

Biggest Surprise:
St. Louis Rams - Grim-x-Reefer

With Dcolon moving out of the NFC West, a power vacuum was created.  At the time of the preseason, the odds on favorite to win the division would have been the 49ers who were coming off of an NFC Championship run last year.  Arizona had received a much needed QB upgrade in RGIII, and Seattle still had a talented team, but it was the unheralded Rams who not only won the division, but locked up the #2 seed in the NFC with their remarkable season.  Yes, they played a weak schedule, but big wins over Tampa Bay, Oakland, NYG, and Denver show that this is team is no longer a schedule win.  Led by terrific Quarterback play from Cortez Simmons and rookie Keeston Grandy, a promising first season from rookie HB Trey Mattinson, and their anchor on defense MLB Navorro Bowman, the Rams are entering the playoffs for the first time; and they intend to make noise when they get there.

Biggest Disappointment:
San Diego Chargers - BigChorizoInu

After 4 straight winning seasons and two Super Bowl losses, the Chargers seemingly lost the will to compete this season and internal strife broke out in the locker room.  QB Cam Newton’s off the field issues became a distraction when he was accused of sexual assault shortly before the season began and matters were only made worse when LE Dion Jordan was pulled over for reckless driving and San Diego police found four pounds of marijuana as well as 4 antique samurai swords in the backseat of his car.  The turmoil in San Diego has reached a boiling point with fans protesting outside the stadium demanding that the team fire the head coach and start anew.

Regular Season Offensive MVP:
QB Matt Barkley - Indianapolis Colts

There was a large crop of deserving players for this award this season.  Adrian Peterson, LeSean McCoy, and Josiah Mattinson all had tremendous seasons running the football, but this year was dominated by outstanding quarterback play.  From the Patriots’ Adam Braithwaite putting up 6,000 + yards through the air, to EJ Manuel stepping in to Denver and leading them to their first AFC West Championship, to the Jets’ Terrelle Pryor causing many sleepless nights for NFL D Coordinators with his ability to make plays with his legs, this year’s QBs took their teams to new heights.  The best of them all might have been Chicago’s rookie QB Hroniss Ajayi, who probably would have won this award had he not missed 6 games to injury.
But the award can only go to one QB and that QB is Matt Barkley.
The 5th year Quarterback out of USC took the mantle of NFL’s best QB this year throwing for 5,500+ yards and putting up a ridiculous 4:1 TD-Int ratio.  His stellar performance kept the Colts’ offense humming all season, all the way to the AFC’s #1 seed.  The AFC playoffs feature some fine teams and strong playmakers, but it’s hard to bet against the Colts’ 8-1 playoff record, especially when Barkley is at the top of his game as he was this season.

Regular Season Defensive MVP:
FS Dashon Goldson - Green Bay Packers

The Packers’ defense was an absolute terror this year, amassing a league leading 72 takeaways, and Dashon Goldson was a huge part of that. At 32 years old, he may not have much left in the tank, but he’s played every game this season like it was his last.  Many other players had seasons worthy of this award (including a few of Goldson’s own Packers teammates), but with his 85+ tackles, 6 INTs, and 7 Forced Fumbles, Goldson was the ‘gold’ standard for NFL defenders this year.
