ok now, i may sound like a moron here to some lol but i just got a new TV - 1080p HD, 120Hz and all that good stuff lol before that, i was rollin with an old school flat screen lol now heres the thing... i know some games come in 720p and some in 1080i... and pretty sure some are in 1080p... now i read up on the difference between the 3 and its all mumbo jumbo lol but what i got from it is that 1080p is the best... now on the back of the madden 11 box, it says the highest resolution it can be played at is 1080i, so id figure thats what my tv would display it on... wrong... for some reason it was on 720p... now i did some ea forum research lol and figured out that you have to go to display settings on ur ps3 and disable the 720p resolution for it to display in 1080i... i did this and now instead of 720p, it displays in 1080p, not 1080i... dont notice much of a difference, but my question is, if the game is available in 1080i, then why would automatically be set to 720p? and why is my tv displaying it in 1080p instead of 1080i, cuz on the back of the game it says 1080i, not 1080p... hope someone can help me out here... does the game look better in 720 or ??? theres something im not getting here lol regardless, its a hell of alot better than my old tv was lol

madden for ps3 will ONLY run in 720p not 1020p like it does for xbox. since your tv is progressive (p) and not interlaced (i) you will not be able to display 1080i as your tv isn't interlaced. therefor, 720p is the max resolution you can project the game to your tv. my tv is 1080i and still looks like ass compared to 720p, so be greatful you got what you got lol.

oh i am man lol trust me lol but i turned off the 720p resolution and it says its displaying it in 1080p, which it doesnt seem to be (it looks the same lol) maybe it just automatically displays 720p regardless of whether u turn it off, but when i switch to the imput my ps3 is on, the screen says 1080p at the top... i just totally dont get it, but yeah it looks amazing lol... but im pretty sure my tv can display in 1080p and 1080i, if thats even possible, cuz ive seen both so far on the display bar when u switch channels... man i feel like grandma trying to get used to her DVD player after 20 years of using a VCR lol thanks for the answer dude

yeah haha idk, just goin off what i know. i'm no tv guru i just put the game in and play it...anything beats my old set up. my tv now is a 48inch 1080i projection so its pretty old school, but i actually prefer it for watching blu rays and such as the picture is less abrasive than those 1080p's. its almost too vivid for me...which is why i havent got one yet.

Because before all the 1080p tvs came out there were only 720p 1080i. Those are like standard settings on ps3 because hdtvs are 720p and 1080i. Im pretty sure thats part of the explanation.

LMAO! really?

ok, so there are basically two ways to display video: interlaced scan (I) or progressive scan (P). progressive scanp displays all the horizontal lines of a picture at one time as a single frame. interlaced scan displays only half of the horizontal lines at a time. interlacing relies on phosphor persistence of the TV tube to blend the fields together over a fraction of a second into a seemingly single picture. the advantage of interlaced video is that a high refresh rate can be achieved with only half the bandwidth. the disadvantage is that the horizontal resolution is essentially cut in half, and the video is often filtered to avoid flicker.

the ps3 is perfectly capable of translating a 1080p picture, obviously...so it really falls in the hands of developers to code the game properly. since most games are ported from the xbox code, we rarely see the transition even attempted. 720p should still look fine on say a 32 inch model, but anything higher can cause flicker and other glitches in the screen unless you have a 120hz model which is becoming more common anyways. i prefer my 1080i because its a big ass screen and i never have any fps loss or video lag.

i don't know much about coding to the signal output, but as far as display types go thats all i can think of...

alright thanks man... you seem to know a little more than most of us lol i did a little more research last night and pretty much found out what you just wrote... more or less what i got from it is that 720p is better for fast moving images and 1080i is better for still images... anyways i have a 1080p 120hz 40 inch (the room is have it in isnt big enough to watch anything bigger than that lol) but i was just wondering what looked better... 720p or 1080i... i think i got my answer... kinda sucks the game doesnt come in 1080p tho... i read somewhere that madden 10 did, but they downgraded this year lol idk why theyd do that... but thats EA for ya... same guys that delayed their new NBA game for about 5 or 6 months lol - but does anyone know if i have all 4 resolutions available checked in the display settings menu (480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p) will it automatically display it in the best quality ? cuz for me to get it to 1080i, i had to go "uncheck" 720p... so i think by doing so, it goes to the next best one thats available which would be 1080i... or maybe it all depends on what kinda tv u have... anyways, its not that big a deal cuz its a hell of alot better than it was on my flatscreen, but i wanna make sure im getting the most out of what i have...

720p is better than 1080i by far, specially on that beastly 120hz you got there.

1080p VS. 1080i VS. 720p Empty Easiest Setting

Post by Rui_F Tue Oct 19, 2010 1:56 pm

Any TV built in the last 4 years with an HDMI input will take a 1080p Signal and turn it into whatever its highest capable output is. So set your PS3 to output 1080P, the PS3 will automatically output whatever the highest res the game is capable of to the tv. One more setting is if you just got a new tv it has automatic visual settings usually listed as something like: Vivid, Normal/Natural, Movie etc. Most TVs come from the factory set on vivid this is a setting used in stores to make tvs extra bright and standout since almost all tvs are set to this anyways they mostly all look the same. This setting is crap for home use and should be changed to Normal/Natural for true color and gray/dark reproduction especially on a LCD or blacks will look like gray. Enjoy.
